Reverend Loomis and the Dynamite
The Dublin Community Church originally was built without a basement. The minister, Reverend Ralph Loomis, promoted the idea of excavating the space beneath the building for group meetings. But the soil was hard clay and would be very difficult to excavate close to the foundations. Dublin was home to quarrying businesses and dynamite experts, so church leaders decided to use small amounts of dynamite for the excavation. Reverend Loomis took responsibility to transport the dynamite in his Model-T Ford each day from one of the quarries back to the church for that day’s excavation. Read of a very funny incident where the Reverend Loomis thought he was "on his way to meet his maker"!
